4 days, over 270km completed with 4530m of incline.
Many congratulations to the whole group – you were MAGNIFICENT!
In August this year we met a small group of cyclists, who had signed up to ride their road bikes from Whitehaven, on the West Coast of England all the way over to Whitby, on the East Coast. The plan was to make the ride achievable for intermediate cyclists, who can comfortably go out for a day’s cycling covering at least 40 miles.
After leaving cars in Whitby we drove the group over to Whitehaven for an evening together before meeting the following morning for a ceremonial wheel dip in the Irish Sea before heading out and up towards the Lake District National Park and into Whinlatter Forest where the group stopped for lunch and a chance to enjoy the beautiful views from Whinlatter Pass. A short ride after and the group were in Keswick and a beautiful and welcoming hotel. This was a shortest day and gave the group a chance to warm-up, build confidence and get to know each other and also enjoy a few hours in Keswick, including a beautiful sunset over Derwent Water.
The following day was a longer one on the bike and took the group right through the Lake District, including a stunning ride by Ullswater before heading into The Yorkshire Dales and stopping at Kirkby Stephen. Once again we enjoyed a few hours of rest and delicious pub meal together.
The third day on the bike was judged to be one of the highlights, with beautiful weather and views through Yorkshire. The group had to work hard though with a couple of long hills up onto the amazing purple covered moors. Cycling through Swaledale and sitting having lunch with spectacular views across the valley was really special. The group also had the chance to have an hour’s train ride on the Wensleydale Heritage Train Line from Redmore to Leeming Bar before a final ride into Northallerton for our final night together.
The last day was the longest ride and although the weather threatened to rain, we remained dry all day as we entered the North York Moors. The group rode through many beautiful villages, some substantial in size and many remote with a sense of bleakness with grey skies and surrounded by the moors. A final steep incline out of the villages and onto the main road and the group were in sight of Whitby and the end! They wheeled their bikes right out onto the beach and stood with the North Sea lapping feet and wheels!
“Wonderfully exhilarating; certainly challenging; amazingly rewarding! Emma and Andy provided the perfect supportive and encouraging environment to offer a cycling trip which both challenges the serious cyclist and encourages the less experienced…
Emma and Andy provided excellent support and encouragement in every respect from Emma’s cheery greeting and welcome lunch breaks, coffee breaks and transportation of luggage beyond the call of duty to Andy’s cycling expertise and superb guidance. We were exceptionally well looked after and cannot recommend this trip highly enough for the cycling enthusiast.” Jane (Coast 2 Coast 2017 Rider)
“Thank you so much Emma and Andy for the most amazing 4 days! Your attention to details, support, motivation & bag carrying etc were the best we have experienced. Thank you so much.” Dawn (Coast 2 Coast 2017 Rider)
