The DofE residential is completed as part of the Gold Award and should be an exciting opportunity, away from home and sharing in an activity with people you haven’t met before. Click here to find out more about the residential section.
This residential is specifically designed for those studying A Level Maths. You will get the opportunity to spend half your day revising and the other half outside doing fun outdoor activities. The idea is during the week you get plenty of study, fresh-air, sleep well, good food and make friends. We know that during your 6th form life can be very busy so we think this 5 day residential ticks every box and enables you to get lots done as well as have a great time.
This residential is based at either Bell Heath in a beautiful area of North Worcestershire (February/April) or at a centre just near Beaulieu on the edge of the New Forest (October). Sleeping arrangements will be in single sex dorms, both with bedding provided. All of our meals are freshly prepared every day and will be eaten together in a comfortable dining room. All outdoor equipment will be provided and there is a room for wet and muddy kit. There is a dedicated classroom for every Maths session.
Each day you will either have a morning or afternoon Maths session, run by Dr Sue Hills, an extremely experienced A Level Maths teacher. The emphasis is on you bringing your own books/laptops and papers and spending the time working independently but able to get 1:1 help with Sue at any time. The groups are small, normally between 8 and 12 so plenty of opportunity to gain all the help you need. Many students feedback to us that just having the time to revise in a quiet and focused setting really helped them. There are also some group activities and challenges included. Late afternoon there are masterclasses delivered by Sue on various Maths topics, which are optional to attend but many students find very helpful.
Every day you will also do a combination of outdoor activities in either a morning and afternoon session. Depending on the location these activities vary from kayaking, archery, climbing wall, zip-wire, bushcraft, high ropes and mountain biking. All equipment is provided for you and the aim is to just have fun and get a break from studying hard.
During the evening there may be team challenges, games, presentations, talks by invited speakers and the opportunity for quiet time/reading/study.
All food is provided for you and cooked on-site. We aim to provide a well balanced menu with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as treats to keep you going. You will have breakfast, lunch, dinner & pudding with mid-morning and afternoon snacks.
