Gold Sailing Residential

Completing your Gold DofE Residential.

The DofE residential is completed as part of the Gold Award and should be an exciting opportunity, away from home and sharing in an activity with people you haven’t met before. Click here to find out more about the residential section.

Join us for a 5 day sailing adventure, with the opportunity to develop skills, gain a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) internationally recognised qualification, have fun and make new friends.

Sailing:

You will learn how to sail dinghies (small boat with a sail that makes it go) for this exciting gold residential. You will have opportunity to sail with others and on your own. Each day you will be on the water developing skills in a structured environment that is both safe and fun. Plus, by the end of the week you will have gained a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) internationally recognised qualification. Now that’s a result!

The daytime you will be sailing the tidal waters of the River Medway, and in the evening there will be a relaxed mix of activities.  This awesome residential has only 6 places available, meaning your experience will certainly be the talking point when you receive your Gold Award from the Palace!

Accommodation:

Accommodation will be in single-sex tents, in the camping area in the grounds of Medway Yacht Club which is situated in Upnor, Kent. Tents will be provided for you, but will need your own sleeping bags, pillows etc. You won’t be re-pitching the tent each night, so bring what you need for a good sleep. You will have use of the club’s changing rooms and shower facilities, and will be temporary member of the yacht club for the duration of the course.

Evening activities:

During the evening there will be a local walk, team challenges, sailing quizzes and an opportunity to prepare towards your RYA sailing qualification.

Clothing essentials for sailing activity:

Whilst you don’t have to look like a brand’s latest sponsorship model, no one wants to be uncomfortable due to inappropriate clothing on the water. Weather and sailing conditions can vary, so here is a helpful list of must haves: Wet boots or boating shoes or soft soled shoes (these will definitely get wet), windproof and waterproof top/jacket, hat, layers of clothing (not cotton) as opposed to one thick layer, sun cream, a wetsuit and swimwear for underneath it, a towel and a pair of gloves(optional) as some people find good for rope grip as well as warmth. A full kit list will be sent with your final course information.

The yacht club will provide you with an appropriately fitted buoyancy aid, but if you have your own, we are happy for you to bring it along.

Food:

All food is provided for you and cooked on-site in the sailing club. We aim to provide a well balanced menu with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as treats to keep you going. You will have breakfast, a packed-lunch and dinner. We recommend bringing a small amount of money as you may wish to buy further snacks and treats in the club house.

Cost:

The cost which includes: 4 nights accommodation with full board, all equipment, RYA qualification and certificate, expert instruction and guidance is £575 plus VAT = £690

Once we receive your booking request we will email you to confirm availability. A non-refundable deposit of £100 will be required upon booking with the remaining amount to be paid 28 days prior to the course.
