This is an opportunity to ride on an exclusive trip on the roads made famous in iconic UCI World Tour Monument bike races around Europe with Graeme and Andy on the The Tour of Lombardy cycling trip.
Lombardy is one of the centres in Italian cycling and home to cycling legends such as Felice Gimondi and brands such as Bianchi. Our base for this Tour of Lombardy is Bergamo. Originally part of the Venetian Empire, it is the home of the Tour of Lombardy, the UCI race known as the, “The Race of the Falling Leaves” and the final monument in the annual professional UCI cycling calendar. The race is held in October between Como and Bergamo and has been won in recent years by the likes of Vincenzo Nibali and Dan Martin.
We will be staying in 3 or 4* hotel accommodation in Citta Bassa (New Town), surrounded by the buzz of this vibrant and provincial city. The hotel accommodation is deliberately located centrally to give us the opportunity to explore this exciting city, surrounded in the New Town by the classical architecture and with glorious views from high up in the Old Own, (Citta Alta). Accessed via a funicular railway, Citta Alta is lined with cobbled streets and boutique shops and restaurants. Our evening meals will be taken in Bergamo taking in the local sweet and savoury ‘Bergamasco’ specialities.
The rides themselves will depart from our hotel each day starting with a steady ride out into the surrounding valleys before tackling the climbs and will always finish back in Bergamo at our hotel. The hotel will provide secure bike storage facilities and bikes will be serviced for you each evening in readiness for the next day.
The individual routes will vary taking us out and up the valleys of Val Seriana and the Val Brembana, taking in climbs such as the Colle Gallo, Selvino and over to the Madonna del Ghisallo. This will include a stop at the famous chapel at the top which is dedicated to the patron saint of cycling and includes a museum dedicated to the history of cycling. The ride will continue on passing through towns along the route such as San Pellegrino, (famous for its Spa and waters), and Taleggio, (renowned for its cheese) and also the beautiful, famous village of Bellagio on the shores of Lake Como.
We will be following the roads regularly used in the Tour of Lombardy, riding the roads frequented by the pros. We will face challenging hill climbs in excess of 8km long and with gradients averaging 8-9% and with exhilarating descents to match. The ride routes are challenging and will demand a good level of fitness with daily distances on average of 130-140km per day. The rides will be fully supported with a vehicle.
