This five day course is designed to teach you all the skills to move around safely in the mountains during the winter months. During the week we will look at ice axe and crampon skills, navigation and winter hazards such as avalanche awareness, snow conditions and weather. We will do all this while sampling some of the most spectacular mountains in the UK.
Day 1: Meet in the morning in Aviemore where Sam, your instructor, will make sure you’re fully kitted out with the specialist kit needed: winter boots, crampons, helmet and ice-axe as well as checking your own personal kit. In the afternoon you will head out for a small walk into the famous Northern Corries. This will be a good chance to test if your kit is comfortable for the week as well as give you a taste of things to come. He will be able to answer your questions, give you an update on the weather conditions and the plans for the week ahead.
The following days may be swapped around/altered to make best use of the ground and weather conditions.
Day 2: The focus of the day will be to look at crampon and ice axe skills. You will head out on a journey through the mountains looking at all the skills needed to use ice axe and crampons safely on different types of terrain.
Day 3: Today you will aim to summit one of the many Munro’s in the area. The focus will be looking at winter navigation and avalanche awareness skills.
Day 4: This day is all about the skills needed to move safely and efficiently on steep ground.
Day 5: The final day you will aim to summit Ben Macdui (the second highest mountain in the UK) this will involve crossing the Cairngorm Plateau and so will be a long day. It will be the perfect opportunity to use all the skills you have looked at through the week and bring them all together in one of the best winter mountaineering days out in the UK.
